A playing career before coaching success
Before becoming one of football's most famous managers, Alex Ferguson was himself a professional player. A prolific forward, he played for several Scottish clubs and scored 171 goals in 317 matches in the Scottish league.
During his playing career, he notably won the Scottish Second Division championship with St Johnstone in 1963 and became the top scorer in the Scottish First Division in 1966 for Dunfermline Athletic. After also playing for Falkirk and Rangers, he ended his playing career in 1974 to fully dedicate himself to coaching.
The beginnings of an exceptional manager
Alex Ferguson began his coaching career in Scotland with East Stirlingshire and St Mirren, before achieving his first major successes at the helm of Aberdeen FC. Between 1978 and 1986, he transformed the Scottish club into a true national and European powerhouse.
Under his leadership, Aberdeen won three Scottish championship titles, several national cups, and notably the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983, by defeating Real Madrid in the final. In the same year, the club also won the European Super Cup, confirming the exceptional quality of Ferguson's work.
These performances caught the attention of Manchester United, who decided to recruit him in November 1986.
A historic dynasty at Manchester United
