Hope Solo
Hope Solo – World's Best Goalkeeper 2013 | IFFHS LEGEND
Hope Solo is considered one of the most iconic goalkeepers in the history of women's football. In 2013, the American keeper confirmed her status as a global benchmark by winning the title of World's Best Goalkeeper awarded by the IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics) for the second consecutive year.
This international distinction is awarded following a vote by the IFFHS editorial board and football experts from over 70 countries, representing all footballing continents. It annually recognizes the goalkeeper who has made her mark on the season through her performances, consistency, and influence on the game.
A season marked by courage and a return to the top
The year 2013, however, began with a difficult period for Hope Solo. In March, the American goalkeeper had to undergo surgery on her left wrist, an injury that kept her off the field for several months and notably deprived her of the traditional Algarve Cup in Portugal with the United States national team.
But true to her competitive nature, Hope Solo made a spectacular comeback during the summer. She returned to her best level with Seattle Reign FC, a club playing in the National Women’s Soccer League, before once again becoming a key player for the American national team.
Thanks to her decisive performances, her imposing presence in the box, and her natural leadership, she managed to convince IFFHS voters and thus retained her world title.
High-level international competition
The 2013 ranking for the world's best goalkeeper was marked by exceptional competition.
Germany's Nadine Angerer, then 35 years old, finished in second place after a remarkable season. Goalkeeper for 1. FFC Frankfurt and then Brisbane Roar, she led the German national team to victory in the 2013 Women's European Championship. During the competition, Angerer conceded only one goal and particularly distinguished herself in the final against Norway by saving two decisive penalties.
Despite this historic performance and her title as best player of the tournament, Angerer finished just six points behind Hope Solo in the final IFFHS ranking.
Third place went to Danish goalkeeper Stina Lykke Petersen, who also had a remarkable Euro with Denmark, leading her team to the semi-finals of the European tournament.
A legend of women's football
With this second consecutive title of IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper, Hope Solo confirmed her status as a major figure in international football. Her ability to make spectacular saves, her leadership, and her strong personality have helped to define a whole generation of players and fans.
Her name remains associated with the great performances of the United States national team, one of the most dominant selections in women's football.
